Fredericton Police Force Presents 2008 Annual Report

Fredericton - The 2008 annual report of the Fredericton Police Force was presented to City Council today by Police Chief Barry MacKnight.

 The 26-page report lists the 2008 accomplishments of the Force and highlights its progress on implementing its five-year strategic plan to improve policing in the City.

 It also contains a statistical summary of crime in Fredericton during the year. The Force received 24,780 calls for service during 2008. Crimes against people, which includes everything from harassing phone calls to murder rose 18 per cent compared to the five-year average with marked increases in sexual assault, uttering of threats and assaults on police or other peace officers.

 The Force investigated 3,131 crimes against property in 2008, which is almost identical to the five-year average. While theft from vehicles rose 24 per cent over the five year average, break and enters, car theft, bicycle theft and fraud were all down. Property damage, arson and possession of stolen property were up.

 Drug charges in 2008 were up 63 per cent compared to the five year average with increases in cannabis and cocaine possession charges. Impaired driving and breathalyser refusal were up 18 per cent and 27 per cent respectively in 2008.

 "Crime in Fredericton remained stable in 2008 with a slight increase in crimes of violence and decreases in break and enters and robberies," said Chief MacKnight. "We are committed to reducing crime and helping to build safer and healthier neighbourhoods."
