Fredericton (July 23, 2009) - A Fredericton Police Force officer has been suspended with pay while the RCMP investigates a complaint from a man arrested in the early morning hours July 18, 2009 outside a downtown nightclub.
Earlier today Chief Barry MacKnight announced he has asked the RCMP to conduct a criminal investigation into the complaint filed July 21, 2009 against members of the City Police Force
“It is appropriate to have this complaint investigated by an independent
agency as it must be both impartial and seen to be impartial by the
public,” said Chief MacKnight. “Fredericton Police have the trust and
respect of the diverse community we serve and we will maintain that trust
and respect.”
The complaint follows an altercation at a downtown night club which
resulted in the arrest of a male in the early morning hours of July 18,
2009.
The New Brunswick Police Commission has also been notified of the
complaint. “It is important to let this independent investigation proceed so the
facts of this incident can be determined,” said Chief MacKnight. “We are
doing this by the book and it will be as open as possible.”
