The Fredericton Police Force’s Neighbourhood Action Team is proud to announce that it has partnered with local community groups in order to provide a week long summer camp for 12 children ages 8-12 yrs. Scheduled for July 27th to July 31st, 2009, the theme of this camp is a
mini Police Academy with both an educational and recreational component that will allow our police officers to mentor and bond with the children.
The educational aspect will introduce the children to the exciting world of specialized police work including crime scene analysis, police service dog and emergency response. The participating children will each receive a Kids & Kops ball hat as well as a customized T-shirt with the child’s name.
Throughout the week there will be numerous fun activities planned. The highlight will be a full day, city-wide Amazing Race scavenger hunt. This Amazing Race will see the children partnered with officers and divided into teams that will scour the city looking for clues to solve a mystery crime. At the end of the week the camp will culminate with a graduation ceremony at Killarney Lake Lodge where the Chief of Police Barry MacKnight will present the children with a graduation certificate and a souvenir police badge.
This program has already received tremendous support among the Fredericton
Police Force members with several officers volunteering their time in an effort to participate. Although the Kids & Kops camp is being conducted this year for the first time in Fredericton, the program has been in existence among major police forces in Canada for the past ten years.
Partners include the Multicultural Association of Fredericton, St Mary’s First Nation, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and the Fredericton Boys and Girls Club. Each of these community groups has sponsored three children to participate in the Kids & Kops camp.
The Fredericton Police Force is looking forward to this unprecedented opportunity to develop and support positive relationships between police officers and children. While this initial program will involve registration of children currently involved with the mentioned partnering associations and community groups, future camps may be set up to include a limited registration of all youth in the City between the ages of 8 to 12 years.
