The Fredericton Police Force Welcomes Work Placements

Picture of Hwang Ki YongSince early April of this year, the Fredericton Police Force has been
fortunate to have the services of KiYong Hwang through a provincially funded work placement program in conjunction with the Multicultural Association of Fredericton. During his six month term with the Police Force, KiYong is assisting Cst. Duncan Lombard with the creation of a guidance program for new Canadians and immigrants that are interested in pursuing a career in Policing.

Born in South Korea in 1973, KiYong is married and has two sons, one in grade two and the other in kindergarten. While the children are in school, KiYong's wife attends the Multicultural Association of Fredericton English learning classes. After graduating from high school in Seoul, Korea, KiYong went on to University, later graduating with a Bachelor of Physical Education Degree, with a Major in Judo.

In Korea, KiYong has worked with the International Military Service as a Military Police Officer and has also worked at the Burger King Headquarters in South Korea. Since arriving in Fredericton as a 'Landed Immigrant' with his family in February 2008, KiYong initially attended English Classes at the
Multicultural Association of Fredericton to improve his English skills.  KiYong also attended 'New Brunswick Enhanced Language Training' classes to further improve his English skills and to learn new things about Canadian culture and work placement culture. KiYong graduated from the
Multicultural Association of Fredericton on March 25th, 2009.

As stated by KiYong, 'as I learn more about the language and cultures in Canada, my new goal is to gain employment in the law enforcement field.  The experience I will gain with the Fredericton Police Force will hopefully help my dreams in this new country, for myself and my family'.  While working with the Force, KiYong has met many new people and has assisted in giving a few Police Station tours for Multicultural student groups. As described by Cst. Ralph Currie, spokesperson for the Force, we are very honored and privileged to have KiYong on board. Through our long
standing relationship with the UNB Computer Science Program, we frequently have students working with us from various parts of the globe. It is a great experience all around.
